Student can't log in

We've spent some days on this with no luck. Below are the steps the student has taken to log in. Is there a way to manually add a student?

"I have so far followed the instructions on schoology and navigated to canvas.instructure.com/register then clicked "I’m a student" and entered the join code: MDPRTL. However, everytime I tried to login, it stated that the email was already in use. So I have tried to use different emails to login in and yet it stated that the email was already in use again when it was not in use. One of the emails that I have used was created on the day that I tried to login for the sole purpose of logging in, yet it stated that the email was already in use. I tried clearing the cookie wondering if it may change the output but it had given me the same message. Even when changing the device to log in with, the website told me the same message again. I have even tried a different link (canvas.instructure.com) but it stated that the email was invalid. "

If the student already has an account, could they possibly sign in an then enroll in the class then? They can use this link if they already have the canvas.instructure.com account: https://canvas.instructure.com/enroll/MDPRTL

Edit: I suppose they might not have an account already, but also trying "recover password" on one of the more likely ones seems like a reasonable step to try.

Edit2: I re-read your post, and I see that it says that after account creation and the student tries to log in, that's when they get an "email in use" error? That's a bit strange, but also: I know the login form asks for their email address, but I've only ever had luck signing in using the username instead.
